SECRET IDENTITY: Who Should Direct 'Wolverine 2'?

WolverineBy all accounts, 20th Century Fox is sharpening its claws for the "X-Men" franchise. With Matthew Vaughn about to direct "X-Men: First Class" and Robert Rodriguez being courted for "Deadpool," the race is now on to find a director for "Wolverine 2."

Some interesting names have popped up for the "Wolverine" director's chair over the past few days and weeks. In today's edition of Secret Identity, we're looking at the rumored candidates — plus a couple of other possible contenders — and examining their qualifications for the "Wolverine" sequel.

Darren Aronofsky
At first glance, the "Requiem for a Dream" director is an odd name to throw into the "Wolverine" mix. But he was once attached to the "Batman" reboot that eventually fell into Chris Nolan's hands, giving him some comic book credibility. He also has the benefit of experience working with Hugh Jackman thanks to "The Fountain."

All that said, Aronofsky is anything but conventional, and his vision of "Wolverine" might be difficult to reconcile with a studio seeking a big budget tent pole picture — but for my own personal tastes, Aronofsky's avant-garde approach to the Japan-set sequel would be quite the sight to behold.

David Slade
Considered the current front runner for the "Wolverine" directing job, Slade has experience not just as a comic book director in "30 Days of Night," but also as the man behind a major franchise in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse." If he could handle legions of Twihards, there's little doubt that Slade could handle the "Wolverine" supporters. But would the comic book community embrace someone so closely tied to the "Twilight" brand?

To Slade's credit, "Eclipse" is considered the most guy-friendly installment of the vampire romance saga, but that might not be enough to stop "Wolverine" fans from flipping their middle claws at the notion of "Twilight."

Robert Schwentke
Deadline reports that Schwentke was once in the running for "Wolverine" but has since removed himself from the competition. It's a shame — with the growing buzz surrounding "Red," I bet Schwentke would have done a great job with the "Wolverine" sequel.

Jumping from a science fiction romance tale like "The Time Traveler's Wife" to a pedal-to-the-medal action-comedy in "Red," Schwentke has absolutely proved his versatility in handling different kinds of material — but if rumors are to be believed, he won't be going toe-toe-toe with Logan.

Gavin Hood
Why are we looking for a new director in the first place? Why shouldn't Gavin Hood get another crack at the "Wolverine" franchise? Although "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" wasn't universally loved, Hood himself did an admirable job of crafting a compelling picture. But the fans who didn't enjoy the first "Wolverine" likely wouldn't want Hood back for the second, and there's definitely something to be said for bringing new blood to the project.

Bryan Singer
Digging back even further, what's stopping Bryan Singer from taking another shot at directing an "X-Men" movie? "Wolverine" would be a natural fit given that Singer gave Jackman his first major break in Hollywood with "X-Men," allowing the two of them a chance to tap back into that old well of chemistry.

Still, Singer has a busy schedule with films like "Jack the Giant Killer" and "Battlestar Galactica" on his plate, so his involvement with the "X-Men" franchise will likely remain relegated to producing — at least for now.
